Double or even triple tool or part life. Increase its wear resistance…
…by freezing it?!
It’s counter-intuitive but true: cryogenically treated high-carbon or high-alloy steels are stronger and tougher than their non-treated counterparts.
Why?
Because standard quenching processes leave significant residues of soft, malleable austenite in the grain structure of high-carbon and high-alloy metals. Cryogenic treatment- freezing the material to temperatures as low as minus 315 degrees Fahrenheit and then bringing it back to ambient temperature, relieves stress and improves wear characteristics by transforming the austenite into hard, durable martensite. And it does it for the whole piece, not just the surface. In some metals, such as tool steels, it also causes fine carbide particles to precipitate through the matrix, further hardening the material, lowering its coefficient of friction, and thus dramatically enhancing its wear resistance.
As is the case with any treating or finishing process, if it’s not done right it can produce the opposite effect of the one intended.
